Aletha (Altha) Viljoen began her professional career in equine training and management at the SAPS where for over four years she served as a Superintendent at Commander Mounted School’s Division of Crime Prevention in Pretoria. Her duties included the management of all physical, financial and human resources, the training section, the farrier section, the breeding and schooling section as well as to oversee the stable yard management. Altha also acted as the Secretary of the SGB for Equine Management and Equestrian Training at SAQA.
Currently, Altha acts as Superintendent of Monitoring and Evaluation for Mounted Services of the Division of Crime Prevention. In this capacity, she is responsible for national evaluation and monitoring of all SAPS horses, the development of national policies, guidelines and standards, the optimizing of mounted services, the management of resources and continues her duties as Secretary of the SGB for Equine Management and Equestrian Training at SAQA.
With over fifteen years of formal studies, Altha is highly trained in horsemastership and management skills. Among her numerous achievements, has completed SANEF certification in Level 5 in Horsemastership, Horsemanship and Riding Instruction. She also holds SANEF certificates in Stableyard Skills, Health and Safety, Strategic Management and First Aid. Altha has completed the Animal Behaviour Course for Horses at Ethology Academy. Additionally, she has studied T-Touch for Horses and trained in Monty Roberts’ Join-up and Follow-up techniques for horses.
